Is there a way to make washable marker on clothes stay in place?

My 5-year decorated a T-shirt old that I started. It really loves his work art, and now wants to save. He used regular Crayola markers, which are washable. I thought we would throw the shirt away. But now I want to be able to launder the shirt, except I think it will ruin his art. Do I apply to it to protect design?

Your best bet is probably to go on the current configuration with a permanent marker.
